As Christine and I travel around from place to place, a couple of issues are becoming more and more clear. One issue we consider to be pretty essential for responsible travel is to minimize your need for single-use containers. Tourism can have a major impact on some of the most magical destinations in the world due to the amount of unnecessary trash generated by visitors. We can all do better.
With a healthy amount of options available, it is fairly simple to pick up a reusable container to use for your drinks to decrease the amount of disposable bottles and coffee containers you use every day. It’s a change we can all make.
Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles, but only recycled 38.
Because Christine and I are always trying to find products that are small, can get pretty beat up and have a bunch of uses (we are still trying to live out of just a few bags!) we wanted to try Hydro Flasks, a product that is supposed to keep liquids super hot or icy cold, at a reasonable size and weight and keeps condensation to a minimum. Is that a lot to ask?
We had borrowed a couple different Hydro Flasks here and there, but in December 2016 Hydro Flask sent us our very own to try out. They sent one for both Christine and I so we could both take them on several adventures.
The Flask is pretty incredible. It absolutely stands up to the claims of keeping coffee hot for hours and drinks almost too cold even longer. After putting everything we could think of to drink in these things from juice, to tea, to hot apple cider, to sports drinks, and even beer, they didn’t hold the flavor or smell after they were cleaned.
What makes Hydro Flask more than just a water bottle?
As many of you can probably relate to, when you try to travel on even a short trip, you often end up shoving all sorts of things into one bag thinking you’ll sort it out later. Christine and I live this reality for years at a time, and OFTEN have documents and electronics that can’t get wet jammed in our bags. One thing that we really like about the Hydro Flask is that is has a perfect seal and doesn’t sweat condensation when you fill it with ice and liquids. I feel totally comfortable filling mine full of hot coffee, putting it next to my cameras and passport and starting a big day of travel.
Hydro Flask stands up to the adventure!
We have taken these things on long hikes, fishing boats, dive boats, kayak adventures, and on several road trips. They are tough and rugged. While we have been pretty careful with them, they have taken a few real tumbles on the concrete and never so much as began to leak.
While we are far from eliminating 100% of our single-use dependency, Christine and I make a very conscious effort to avoid the waste when it is possible.
We know there a lot of great options out there for reusable drinking containers, but we think that Hydro Flask makes a superior product for the adventurer or traveler with the environment in mind.
DISCLAIMER: While Hydro Flask did give us a couple of flasks to try out, we would never recommend something that we do not actually use or believe in. We have your best interest at heart, this is a great product and responsible company. Thank you Hydro Flask for supporting Fins to Spurs.
