One of the newest items Christine and I felt was mandatory to lug across the world is… a $7 yoga mat! Yup, a cheap blue yoga mat for two people who still cringe at the term “yogi” and are not quite sure what exactly “downward facing dog” is supposed to look like. We spent a little longer than we would like to admit mulling over the decision, picking up every mat in the store to test for minimal weight yet with maximum padding. The poor clerk at the little yoga shop in Ubud was not impressed as she rolled out each sample mat for Christine to roll around on the store floor under the stretchy pants racks in an expert test of “will this one hurt my spine?” Finally, the big decision was between a mat costing $20 and one costing $7. Christine reasoned that we should be the proud owners of the cheap mat because when the time comes when we cannot make luggage weight at the airport, we will be much less upset about $7 than $20. I agreed and the two of us purchased our first yoga mats ever.
Now, as we travel around, they live strapped to the side of each of our backpacks. We can officially begin our journey towards professional yoga instructors, work out in any hotel room, or more likely have a place to nap when our flight is delayed by 4 hours. All around great new useful addition to the travel kit!
